The Wake-Up Call Recently, I found myself unexpectedly confronted with the stark realities of environmental destruction during an earnings announcement from Teekay Oil Tanker. As they detailed the global reliance on oil, another addiction crossed my mind—our rampant consumption of fashion. This triggered something in me. I realized that every choice we make, even in our closets, contributes to the environmental crisis we are facing.

The True Cost of Fashion Fashion, I learned, is not just about style—it’s the third-largest polluter on the planet. This wasteful cycle of consumption creates a staggering 92 million tons of textile waste each year. I couldn’t shake the image of documentaries showing workers in developing nations sorting through barely-worn clothes from wealthier countries, only to turn them into recycled textiles for new garments. It wasn’t just the waste that upset me—it was the inefficiency and the sheer exploitation of resources and labor.

At that moment, I knew that something needed to change. But how?

A Moment of Personal Reflection Change often starts with personal experience, and my own closet was the perfect case study. On my birthday, my wife gave me a gentle nudge to wear a T-shirt she had gifted me nine months earlier—a shirt I had completely forgotten. It wasn’t just any shirt; it was embroidered with my name, “Paris.” Despite it being a thoughtful and personal gift, it had been lost in the chaotic mess of my closet. This moment made me painfully aware of just how much I owned—and how much I never wore.

I discovered that I had 66 items in my closet, yet most of them remained untouched, their potential buried under clutter. It was frustrating, overwhelming, and wasteful. But more than that, it revealed how disconnected I was from my own consumption.

The Birth of Closet Conscious This frustration led to a moment of clarity. If I was struggling with organization and visibility in my own closet, surely others were, too. That’s when I came up with the idea for Closet Conscious—a virtual closet app designed to solve these very problems. I wanted to create something that would help people see what they own, plan their outfits more efficiently, and reduce unnecessary shopping. It wasn’t just about fashion anymore—it was about conscious consumption.

A Step Toward Sustainability I believe that Closet Conscious is more than just an app. It’s a tool for anyone who wants to take control of their wardrobe and, in doing so, reduce their fashion footprint. By making conscious decisions about what we wear, we can directly influence the environmental impact of the fashion industry.

What Comes Next? This is just the beginning of my journey. Building Closet Conscious has been anything but smooth. I’ve faced technical challenges, self-doubt, and pushback. But I know the change I want to see in the world, and I’m determined to make it happen.

What are your thoughts on fashion consumption? How do you ensure you’re making conscious choices in your wardrobe?
