As I embarked on the journey to create Closet Conscious, one thing became clear: building a scalable app from the ground up requires more than just technical skills—it demands smart decision-making to ensure the app can grow sustainably while meeting user needs. With millions of potential users already engaging with similar virtual closet apps, scalability was non-negotiable. Here’s how I’ve approached the key challenges in development, aiming to deliver a fast, reliable, and user-friendly app.

Minimizing Tech Debt While Navigating Product-Market Fit

In a fast-evolving tech landscape, many startups fall into the trap of accruing technical debt by coding extensively before validating their ideas. To avoid this, I leveraged FlutterFlow, a no-code platform, to rapidly build and iterate on a functional prototype. This strategy allowed me to gather feedback early, gauge user interest, and identify pain points without investing heavily in development.

Once I had validated Closet Conscious’s core concepts, I transitioned to building the app from scratch with Flutter. This blend of rapid prototyping and solid development practices (like Clean Architecture) has enabled me to build a maintainable and scalable app that is tailored to user needs without accumulating unnecessary tech debt.

Choosing a Cross-Platform Framework

One of the critical early decisions was whether to build natively for each mobile OS or opt for a cross-platform framework. The goal was clear: make Closet Conscious accessible on both Android and iOS. Based on insights from fellow developers and advice from generative AI tools, I chose the cross-platform route.

Going cross-platform simplifies the development process, ensuring that updates are faster and that users across devices get a consistent experience. I chose Flutter because it combines performance with flexibility, offering near-native rendering and a vibrant developer community, making it ideal for a robust, scalable app.

Why Flutter for Cross-Platform Development

Flutter stood out as the best choice for Closet Conscious due to its:

  • Performance: Flutter delivers close-to-native performance, crucial for an image-heavy app.
  • Developer Tools: Features like hot reload speed up the development process.
  • Community and Support: Backed by Google, Flutter is well-supported, giving me confidence that it’s a framework I can rely on long-term.

By choosing Flutter, I can innovate quickly and provide a smooth, engaging user experience on both Android and iOS, all while keeping development costs and timelines manageable.

Opting for Backend as a Service (BaaS)

As a solo founder, I needed to prioritize efficiency without sacrificing quality. Managing a cloud platform like AWS can be cost-effective but requires deep technical expertise to avoid costly misconfigurations. Instead, I opted for a Backend as a Service (BaaS), which offers predictable pricing, accelerates development, and reduces backend maintenance.

Choosing an Open Source Backend: Supabase

For the backend, I chose Supabase, an open-source alternative to Firebase. Supabase provides similar features, including real-time databases and authentication, but with the flexibility of open-source technology. It uses PostgreSQL, allowing for complex queries and seamless data management. Supabase’s transparent pricing and active community ensure that I can scale the app without running into unexpected costs, all while maintaining control over customization.

Implementing Clean Architecture for Scalability

To ensure the app remains clean and scalable, I implemented Clean Architecture, which organizes the codebase into independent layers—Presentation, Application, Domain, and Data. This structure makes it easier to manage the app’s growth, ensuring that new features can be integrated without disrupting existing functionality. Clean Architecture also makes it easier to switch technologies or adjust to user demands as the app evolves.

Enhancing Test-Driven Development with Generative AI

Adopting Test-Driven Development (TDD) has been essential to maintaining the app’s quality. I’ve taken this a step further by incorporating Generative AI to speed up the TDD process. By generating pseudocode, creating test cases, and refining code based on tests, AI allows me to focus on the strategic aspects of development. This approach not only increases efficiency but also ensures that the code remains clean and reliable as new features are added.

Leveraging Domain-Driven Design (DDD) for Feature Flexibility

The revenue model for Closet Conscious requires a system that can easily activate and deactivate features based on user needs. By using Domain-Driven Design (DDD), I’ve been able to structure the app’s software architecture in a way that aligns with the business model. DDD allows for clear boundaries between different domains, making it easier to manage premium features and ensure users only pay for what they use.

Effective State Management with BLoC

For a feature-rich app like Closet Conscious, efficient state management is crucial. I chose BLoC (Business Logic Component) for its ability to handle asynchronous events and manage complex state transitions smoothly. BLoC decouples business logic from the UI, making it easier to add new premium features without overcomplicating the codebase. This approach ensures the app remains responsive, maintainable, and adaptable to future needs.

Ancillary Considerations

Optimizing Deployment with CI/CD

To ensure seamless updates and minimize downtime, I integrated Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) early on. This automated testing and deployment system allows me to push updates faster, ensuring that new code integrates smoothly with the existing app. With separate development and production environments, I can safeguard the user experience while iterating quickly.

Optimizing Image Handling

Since Closet Conscious is an image-heavy app, efficient image handling is critical. I optimized image storage by resizing images to fit required resolutions and generating different sizes dynamically. Supabase’s image optimization tools also help reduce bandwidth usage while maintaining high-quality images. These optimizations ensure that Closet Conscious remains quick and responsive, even as users upload more images.
